Medical Marijuana For Women: What Are The Benefits?

By Feb 14, 2019 0 Comments

Now more than ever medical professionals are turning to cannabis to treat common health concerns, especially for women. Several studies on medical marijuana for women found that cannabinoids like THC and CBD offer a myriad of benefits in treating the symptoms of both common health conditions and debilitating diseases. In fact, cannabis has been shown to help women with a number of ailments where other remedies are less effective. What are these conditions? Patients have reported some of the following relief from marijuana use.

Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Women who use cannabis to address PMS symptoms, such as cramping, generally find it very helpful. That’s because the endocannabinoid system undergoes changes during the oestrus and dioestrus phases of menstruation. Simply put, premenstrual cramps can be mitigated or stopped with the ingestion of certain cannabinoids.

Mood Swings Associated with PMS in Women

It’s common for women to experience changes in mood in conjunction with hormone fluctuation during different phases of the menstrual cycle. Sometimes, though, these mood swings are severe and call for treatment. Marijuana can help. Primarily, it can be very effective in helping suppress extreme feelings of depression and anger.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 11% of American women between the ages of 15 and 44. Characterized by the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterine wall – on the fallopian tubes, ovaries or uterus – endometriosis can be quite painful and lead to problems such as abnormal bleeding, infertility and poor digestion. It’s no surprise cannabis can help. Marijuana has been shown to aid in digestive problems as well as relieve chronic pain and inflammation.

Women with Depression

Women are twice as likely to be diagnoses and treated for depression than men. Their risk of onset also increases with age and is often triggered with the hormone fluctuations that accompany menopause. In cases where the root cause of depression is hormonal imbalance, cannabis can offer relief by restoring balance, especially as it relates to estrogen.

Women with Diabetes

Nearly 12 million women are diagnosed with diabetes every year and 3 million go undiagnosed. It’s a growing problem but cannabis can help. In some studies, cannabis was found to stabilize blood sugar. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which can alleviate arterial inflammation and ancillary symptoms (common ailments in patients with diabetes). Plus, cannabis has neuro-protective properties that can reduce nerve inflammation, therefore reducing neuropathy and neuropathic pain associated with the illness. Cannabis also offers anti-spasmodic benefits that aid in reducing muscle spasms and cramps. It can help reduce gastrointestinal pain and discomfort that diabetes sufferers commonly cite as symptoms.

Women with Rheumatoid Arthritis

The Arthritis Foundation estimates that women are 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis than men. An autoimmune disease, RA is caused by inflammation of the joints that leads to pain, swelling and stiffness. Again, the anti-inflammatory properties of cannabis can help. Studies found that cannabinoids are especially effective in treating murine collagen-induced arthritis.

Consult with A Doctor Before Using Medical Marijuana

Use cannabis under the care of a medical professionals. Precaution should always be exercised when considering the use of any medical treatment weather it’s traditional, homeopathic or alternative. Be sure to consult your doctor if you wish to use cannabis to treat these conditions or any others.
