Medical Marijuana Denver: 6 Cannabinoids You Should Know

Cannabis plants are chemical powerhouses that produce over 400 different chemical compounds. Of these compounds (better known as cannabinoids), nearly 60 of them offer a number of different health benefits. While only a handful have been closely researched, several are thought to produce positive effects on the human body*. Understanding how cannabinoids may affect your health can help determine which strains or products are right for you.

Here is a list and high-level descriptions of six cannabinoids and the conditions they treat:

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

THC may be most well-known cannabinoid for the euphoric and psychoactive effect it produces, commonly known as a “high”. It’s a superior pain-killer and may be used to improve appetite and decrease nausea and vomiting. One study concluded that it can even improve memory in very low doses. Other common uses include aiding sleep, managing glaucoma and reducing muscle spasms.

Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A)

From a pharmacological standpoint, THC-A is THC minus the properties that produce psychoactive effects. It’s thought to be especially effective in treating inflammation, nausea and certain types of cancer. It may also be used to reduce seizures and muscle spasms.

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THC-V)

THC-V is similar to THC in molecular structure and psychoactive properties, but it produces a variety of different effects. It’s thought to suppress appetite, help treat diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels and reducing insulin resistance, reduce panic attacks without surprising emotion, treat some symptoms of Alzheimer’s such as tremors and loss of motor control, and stimulate bone growth.

Cannabidol (CBD)

CBD is the most studied cannabinoid with superior medical benefits. While some might argue that CBD is psychoactive because it prompts relaxation and anxiety relief, it’s generally accepted that CBD does not cause the same euphoric high that THC does. CBD has been used to treat epileptic seizures and serious neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease. It’s also thought to be an effective treatment for inflammation and mood disorders, cancer symptoms and chronic pain.

CBG

CBG, a lesser-known cannabinoid, has been found to act on very specific physiological systems and problems. Its medicinal applications are promising. It’s thought to be especially effective in treating glaucoma as it reduces intraocular pressure. It was also found to be effective in decreasing inflammation of the bowl associated with inflammatory bowel disease. It shows great promise as a cancer fighter as studies prove it block receptors that cause cancer cell growth.

Cannabinol (CBN)

CBN offers a unique profile of benefits that scientists are still studying. This cannabinoid is best known as a sedative but has many other benefits. CBN is thought to promote bone cell growth, serve as an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-convulsive, as well as work as an appetite stimulant. It’s a breakdown product of THC. As harvested cannabis ages, THC will gradually convert to CBN. CBN is also thought to be particularly useful as a sleep aid.

Clearly, cannabinoids such as these are combating some very serious conditions but are gentle enough to be part of a daily health regimen. They are truly some of the most remarkable compounds in the natural world.
